Who Am I?      A little background, with some thoughts about art:

I graduated from Westminster College in 1990 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Art Education. My emphasis was in Ceramics and Photography. I took jewelry/metalsmithing classes on the side after graduating.  I received a research/teaching assistantship with a ‘full-ride’ to the University of Tennessee (GO VOLS!) for my Master’s degree. My concentration was in Ceramics and Photography. In 1992 I graduated and started teaching elementary art K-8 full-time in Crossville, Tennessee. I was responsible for 2 schools (1600 students). I even crossed a time-zone on my way to work everyday! In 1996 I was hired in the Mentor School system to teach various art classes, 7-9thgrade, at Shore Jr. High, spending some time at Ridge and Memorial Jr. Highs. For the 2004-2005 school year I started teaching ceramics, photography and metalsmithing/jewelry classes at Mentor High School. I am now in my 27th year teaching, my 15th year teaching at Mentor High School.

I have traveled to Europe four times and spent a summer living in Berlin, Germany. I have also worked summers at the theme park ‘Dollywood’ making utilitarian pieces on the pottery wheel to sell at the park. I have my own working studio for ceramics at my house and (when time allows) I sell my wheel thrown pieces in a friend’s shop in Greenville, Pennsylvania where I grew-up. I am also taking digital photos when/where ever I can and have built up a collection of over 20,000 digital images. In any other free time I may have, I love to design, create and wear my own metalsmithing pieces of jewelry.

I am a single mom with two amazing children and one silly dog.

Philosophy:

I believe in practicing what I preach. If I am going to make the student do a specific art assignment, then I should have already tried it myself. I believe in being an art teacher that creates art, as well as, an artist that teaches art. I am at my most creative-self when I am doing, and that is what I strive for with my students. The ability to create is in all people and my goal is help the student find an outlet for that creativity.
