Dear Parents and Guardians,
As you know, state testing is getting underway this week in Mentor Public Schools. We are one of many districts across the state implementing testing in an online format this year, due to the requirements of the Ohio Department of Education. While the transition has come with some technical difficulties (beyond our control), I believe it is important that we work together to foster a positive testing experience for our students and staff.
Our teachers are working closely with our technology team to administer the new online tests using Chromebooks. During practice runs over the last couple of weeks, we did encounter some difficulties that I have spoken publicly about to the Ohio Senate Education Committee. (You can view the testimony through this link.) We will continue to be vocal about the issues we encounter to our state legislators and other decision-makers as the process continues to unfold in an effort to make positive changes for our students. In time, I believe online tests will be the best way to assess what our students are learning.
In the meantime, I do not want our students and staff to feel pressure about these tests that we know are not perfect. As the State of Ohio works with us to resolve these issues, what we can control is the climate we provide our students and teachers. We will make sure every student has the support he or she needs and the assigned time allotted to take each test. As always, please encourage your children to do the best they can and ensure they get a good night’s rest and a healthy breakfast prior to the school day.
Thank you for your continued trust in Mentor Public Schools.
