Local police K9 units assist administrators in conducting drug search at MHS

May 3, 2016 -- Six police K-9 units from the Mentor Police Department and other agencies in the surrounding area assisted Mentor Schools’ administration with a drug sweep of Mentor High School today. After a very thorough search of the building and parking lot, no drugs were found.

While we are pleased with that result, some concern was raised because the police dogs did indicate a potential presence of drugs in several lockers and cars during the sweep. This led the high school principals to have a conversation which each student whose locker or car was searched, and his or her parents/guardians.

We know the majority of our students are making good choices. Part of the goal of today’s search was to send a message to students that we take their safety seriously and that drugs will not be tolerated at Mentor High School.

“Providing our students with a safe and secure learning environment is our district’s number one priority, and keeping our buildings drug free is a part of that,” Superintendent Matthew Miller said. “We encourage all parents and guardians to join us in taking this opportunity to have a conversation with their children about the dangers and consequences of drug use. It’s important as a community we work on drug prevention together.”

The search happened just after 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. Staff and students were notified to go into a shelter-in-place drill, which means teachers were asked to keep students in the classroom, but could continue with their lessons. Meantime, Mentor High School parents and guardians were notified of the search via email.

The district appreciates the assistance of the Mentor Police Department, Fairport Harbor Police Department, Willoughby Police Department, Willowick Police Department and RTA Transit Police for bringing police dogs to Mentor High School. Today’s search also served as a training opportunity for the K-9s and officers.
