Mentor Board of Education to name William Porter superintendent of Mentor Public Schools through 2020-2021 school year

July 11, 2018 -- The Mentor Board of Education is excited to announce plans to retain Mr. William Porter in the role of superintendent of Mentor Public Schools through at least the next three school years. Mr. Porter began in the role of superintendent in the interim on June 15, 2017. Pending completion of contract details, the board expects to take formal action at a future board meeting.

“Unanimously, the Board of Education is very pleased with the excellent work Mr. Porter has accomplished while serving in the role of Superintendent of Mentor Public Schools and we’ve determined to search no further,” said Mary Bryner, Mentor Board of Education President. “Mr. Porter has demonstrated extremely strong leadership skills this year, especially as he navigated significant district initiatives such as developing a strategic plan and facilities management plan. We believe it is important to keep Mr. Porter’s enthusiasm and passion for education in this key role to continue to benefit the children of our community long-term.”

Throughout the 2017-2018 school year, along with focusing on the district’s number one goal of providing a high quality education in a safe learning environment where students can grow academically, socially and emotionally, Mr. Porter worked hard to create a new three-to-five year strategic plan for Mentor Public Schools. For this process, he invited numerous stakeholders to participate, ensuring many different perspectives had the opportunity to provide input toward creating meaningful goals for our community’s school district.

“As part of the strategic plan, Mr. Porter developed and has begun to implement a comprehensive facilities management plan that is projected to save more than $7 million over the term of our five year fiscal projections,” Mrs. Bryner added. “His commitment to fiscal responsibility while staying focused on our goal of providing the high-quality education our students need and deserve is outstanding.”

Mr. Porter has spent more than 30 years serving Northeast Ohio communities as an educator, including his last ten in Mentor Public Schools. He worked in the various roles of interim superintendent, assistant superintendent, director of K-8 education, principal, assistant principal, teacher (English) and coach. Mr. Porter is highly involved in the prestigious and nationwide League of Innovative Schools. He also earned the John Weiss Lake County Administrator of the Year Award as its first ever recipient.

“I am honored to work as the superintendent of Mentor Public Schools and have the chance to serve the community in which I live and love,” William Porter said. “Having the support of a community that values education affords my team the ability to truly make a difference in the lives of students each and every day. I am excited for the opportunity entrusted to me by the Mentor Board of Education to lead our district for the next three years.”

Mr. Porter completed both his undergraduate work and master’s degree at John Carroll University, before earning his superintendent’s license. He has lived in Mentor for 27 years with his wife, Marie, of 30 years, who is also an educator. Together, they have raised a loving family with four daughters - Jackie, Nicole, Michelle and Danielle.
