Mentor Board of Education appoints new Citizens Financial Advisory Committee members

September 11, 2018: The Mentor Board of Education unanimously appointed two new members to its Citizens Financial Advisory Committee (CFAC) at tonight’s regularly scheduled September meeting, John Brlecic and Adam Sanden. Mr. Brlecic and Mr. Sanden’s work on the committee will begin immediately and their terms run through December 2020.

The CFAC was formed by the Board of Education 15 years ago to review budgeting and forecasting assumptions, help identify best financial practices, make periodic reports to the Board of Education and to serve as the audit committee. Committee members must reside within the school district’s boundaries and have a strong business background.

“We are very appreciative of all of the committee members’ willingness to volunteer their time and expertise to benefit our community’s public school system,” Board of Education President Mary Bryner said. “Mr. Brlecic and Mr. Sanden stood out in the interview process because of their extensive business and financial experiences and demonstrated commitment to community service. We are very much looking forward to working with them both.”

Mr. Brlecic is now retired from 42 years of progressive financial positions in both the public and private sectors, including serving as a Budget Analyst & Administrative Manager for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio and as Accounting Supervisor for Picker International. He has a Master of Business Administration from John Carroll University. Mr. Brlecic and his family have resided in Mentor for more than 15 years.

“I am very proud to be a naturalized citizen of the United States and it is very important to me to give back to my community,” said Mr. Brlecic. “Great local schools are a key component to having a vital community and I would like to focus some of my 40+ years of public and private sector work experience to assisting this committee.”

Mr. Sanden is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and a Partner, CFO and HR Manager at Brunner Sanden Deitrick Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Mentor. His work experience also includes time working in the public sector as an Associate at Grant Thornton LLP. He earned both his accounting degree and Master in Business Administration degree from John Carroll University. He currently serves as the Chairperson of the Mentor Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. Mr. Sanden, his wife, Renee, and their two young children live in Mentor.

“I am happy to have the opportunity to serve our community by being involved in Mentor Public Schools, especially working with a team of people whose goal is to ensure our district stays financially sound,” Mr. Sanden said. “I truly believe in the value a high quality school system brings to a community and am hopeful to contribute to that tradition of excellence by offering insight into best financial practices.”

Mr. Brlecic and Mr. Sanden join existing CFAC members Michelle Kaplan, Eryn Medved, Janet Mulh and Bernie Rykaczewski.
