Dear Mentor Schools Families,

As you know, an important initiative we’ve been working on this year is a facilities management plan. After months of careful consideration and thoughtful discussion with staff members, students, community members,  a community task force, board members and parents, the plan is complete.

There is a lot of information to share with you, including school closures (Ridge, Brentmoor, Garfield) and changes to the attendance zone boundaries (Hopkins, Fairfax). I understand some of this may be difficult news to receive, but I want to outline it for you as concisely as possible, as all of the changes will go into effect for the 2018-2019 school year.

Mentor Schools will go from operating three middle schools to two, as Ridge will no longer operate as a middle school. All of Mentor’s middle school students will be assigned to either Shore or Memorial. The new boundaries will zone the Bellflower Elementary area into Shore and the Brentmoor Elementary area into Memorial. Additionally, a small neighborhood in the northern end of the Fairfax zone that currently goes to Memorial will be rezoned to Shore, and we will be communicating with families about that separately. The closure of Ridge as a middle school will bring enrollment numbers to the mid-high 800s at both Memorial and Shore and will have us operating at much healthier building usage rates.

Ridge will then be converted to an elementary school. This will take shape because of the plan to close Brentmoor and Garfield elementary schools and rezone parts of Hopkins and Fairfax. In brief, here is what this will look like:

  • Students currently in the Brentmoor zone will attend the new elementary school at Ridge.

  • The Garfield zone will be redrawn to attend Fairfax, Hopkins, and the new elementary school at Ridge.

  • A large portion of the Hopkins boundaries will be rezoned for the new elementary school at Ridge, which will alleviate overcrowding at Hopkins and create lines that are more geographically fitting.

  • A portion of Fairfax will move into the Orchard Hollow zone and Fairfax will get a new, earlier start time.

  • The new elementary school at Ridge will have a start-time around 9:00 a.m. and will be finalized later.

  • The preschool will stay at Ridge.

  • Students from the new elementary school at Ridge will attend Memorial after 5th grade. (As mentioned above, Bellflower students will go to Shore.)

  • Information regarding special education services will come directly to parents and guardians from the Student Services department.

While I cannot make any guarantees on personnel at this time, our goal will be to work diligently to move staff members from the buildings that are closing into openings at other buildings as the reassignment of students and retirements of staff allow.

Again, I know this news is difficult to receive for many in our district. All of our schools in Mentor are supported by tight-knit community spirit and are full of their own unique traditions. But, we have to look at the district as a whole and how we spend the community’s tax dollars. It is most financially responsible to make these operational changes, and, with this implementation, we are projecting more than $7 million in savings for our general fund over the term of the five year forecast.

Understandably, you may still have questions. To help answer those, we will hold informational community meetings at Paradigm for the buildings that are most affected by the changes.  As you know, transparency has been very important to us throughout this process and it will continue to be moving forward. Here is the meeting schedule:

Community Meetings at Paradigm (6465 Center Street)

Thursday, January 11

5:30 p.m. Fairfax

Tuesday, January 16
5:30 p.m. Brentmoor

7:30 p.m. Ridge

Wednesday, January 17
5:30 p.m. Garfield

7:30 p.m. Hopkins

The next step is for our team to work together to ensure students are prepared to make a successful transition into their new schools. To assist with this, you may wish to talk about the closure of your child’s school, or the re-assignment of your child, in a manner you feel is appropriate for your family tonight, as I anticipate people will be talking about this announcement at school tomorrow.

If your sons or daughters are experiencing a change for next year, we will send you a separate communication with an official assignment within the next few weeks. Please know, there will be several opportunities between now and the start of next school year for them to get acquainted with the new schools, classmates, teachers, and principals.

Thank you for your continued support of Mentor Public Schools.

Sincerely,

Bill Porter

Superintendent (Interim)
