Mentor Schools community,


Good evening. I hope this email finds you and your family doing well. I am sure many of you join us in feeling the incredible disappointment of not being able to finish the school year together in our buildings, rather at home through remote learning instead. While we are saddened by this, I remain grateful that so many of our families have remained healthy during a time of a global health crisis. Mentor Schools will continue to do its part to reduce the spread of COVID-19 by following building closures, work from home and stay at home orders and more.  


As I mentioned in our last video update, which you can watch by clicking here, I am proud of our school community and how we’ve rallied to navigate this challenge together. Parents and guardians, we appreciate you and we hope the adjusted workload for remote learning is helping families manage school work along with everything else you may be juggling right now. 


News that our buildings would be closed to students for the remainder of the school year naturally brings a lot of questions. Please know that while we do not know all of the answers just yet, I can assure you, our team continues to work diligently every day on planning. 


Remote Online Learning

Lessons will continue as previously described, including Flexible Fridays. Please continue the following practices as well: 

  • If children need support with their online learning or a specific assignment, please first contact the teacher and then a building administrator, if needed. 
  • If children need support from our IT Department for help with their devices, please contact it-support@mentorschools.org

Grading

We have made decisions to adjust report cards, grades, and grading used for the 4th nine weeks. 


K-5 GRADING ADJUSTMENTS: 

  • Teachers will be reporting on only the Reading and Math Standards, but they will NOT be posting overall quarter grades.  The report card may look different because of this.
  • Teachers will post progress only on standards that the teacher addressed during the fourth nine weeks.
  • Related Arts teachers will also report on standards only; they will not give an O,S,I.

6-12 GRADING ADJUSTMENTS: 

For students in grades 6-12, we have adjusted our grading scale for the 4th nine weeks due to remote learning:

  • ‘A’ -  80-100%
    • If a student earned between an 80 and 94%, that percent will be changed to a 95% at the end of the grading period by the teacher.  Grades 95% and higher will not change. 
  • ‘B’  - 66-79%
    • If a student earned between a 66 and 79%, that percent will be changed to a 85% at the end of the grading period by the teacher.  
  • ‘C’ - 50-65%  
    • If a student earned between 50 and 65%, that percent will be changed to a 75% at the end of the grading period by the teacher.
  • In addition, final exams have been cancelled for high school students.      

End of Instruction (New Material)


The week of May 18 will be the final week of instruction on new material for students. This means the last day of new assignments for K-5 students will be Thursday, May 21 and the final assignments for 6-12 students will be given on the 18th and due on Friday, May 22. After that and until the end of the official school year, students may continue to make up their work and teachers will continue to work with students as needed, collect work, assign grades, and begin preparation for the 2020-2021 school year. 


Buildings Remain Closed


At this time our buildings remain closed and we are not yet entering them to retrieve personal items. We know many of you have items in our schools and we are currently developing a plan to address this.

Meal Distribution Program 

We continue to pass out grab-and-go style meals on Mondays and Wednesdays at Mentor High School from 9-11 a.m. Several meals are given at a time along with some donated extras. If you are in need of meals for your children, please know we can help! You may still apply for free and reduced meals through the parent portal or contact Ginni Vaccaro at Vaccaro@mentorschools.org or (440)974-5227 with any questions. Also, this link is to a list of local food pantries on the United Way’s website


Call 211 Service

211 is a free, confidential referral and information helpline and website that connects people of all ages and from all communities to the essential health and human services they need, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. 211 can be accessed by phone or computer.
